“Take a big deep breath, smell that pickle-ness, because 100 years ago this is what the Lower East Side would have smelled like,” Sarah Lohman, of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum said recently. Lohman was leading the museum’s newest walking tour “The Taste of the Lower East Side.” Tour-goers learned about the various cuisines of the immigrant groups of the legendary neighborhood from German to Jewish to Chinese. Several stops were made at the neighborhood’s Jewish staples including the Pickle Guys store on Essex Street and Kossar’s Bialys on Grand Street. Check out the tour virtually, in our slideshow and read more about it in Gianna Palmer’s article in this week’s Forward.
